Vacancy Description

  • Closing Date:21/11/2025
  • Area:Cumbria

Due to retirement, we have a vacancy for a 4-6 session GP to join our team.

Castlehead Medical Centre is the only medical centre in the market town of Keswick in the Lake District National Park. Keswick provides everything you need for a fantastic place to live and work. Appointments are scheduled for 15 minutes, with a maximum of 12 patients per surgery. Each session includes a balanced mix of routine and urgent appointments. Most consultations are conducted face-to-face, and we operate a ‘total clinician triage’ model using AccuRx. Workload is shared fairly and evenly across the clinician team. We place great importance on continuity of care and ensure protected time for regular practice meetings. Above all, we pride ourselves on being a friendly, approachable, and sociable team! We are a highly respected GMS (General Medical Services) training practice with a patient list of approximately 8,500. Registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), our most recent full inspection took place in February 2018, when we were awarded an overall Good rating. Dedicated to delivering high-quality patient care, the practice consistently achieves excellent results in the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF), maintaining strong and steady performance over time. Our catchment area covers the central semi-rural town of Keswick and its surrounding villages.

The practice population is largely made up of older adults, professionals, and families. We currently have two GP Trainers and provide training opportunities for both GP Registrars and Medical Students. Our on-site dispensary offers patients convenient access to their prescribed medication. Our GPs also provide medical cover at Keswick Community Hospital, which includes an Urgent Treatment Centre and 16 community hospital beds for step-up, step-down, rehabilitation, and palliative care. We utilise the hospital theatre to deliver minor surgery and family planning services locally. Enhanced access appointments are available on Tuesday evenings (18:30–20:00) and across ten weekends each year, although participation in these sessions is not mandatory. We are proud members of the Keswick and Solway Primary Care Network (PCN), a collaboration of seven local practices working together to extend clinical services and enhance patient care across the region.

The PCN provides additional income streams that support investment in staff and services, as well as opportunities to share resources and improve efficiency for the benefit of the wider community. Through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS), we also have a Lead First Contact Physiotherapist and a Lead Pharmacist based within the practice. We operate within the NHS North East and Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB). Patient care is central to everything we do. The practice is committed to supporting the personal development and wellbeing of all staff while continuing to meet NHS challenges and uphold national quality standards.

We take great pride in our strong team ethos and our clear vision to deliver compassionate, continuous, and high-quality care. Collaboration is a key part of our culture, with each day beginning at 08:45 with a team “huddle” to promote communication and teamwork. Staff engagement extends beyond the workplace, with regular social events such as summer family BBQs and Christmas parties—helping to maintain a positive, supportive environment and a historically low staff turnover.
